Welcome to WAND’s newly constructed web site. We plan to bring to residents of West Anaheim ongoing news and events to keep you informed of what is going on in our community. WAND is a non-political group.
WAND (West Anaheim Neighborhood Development Council) began thirteen years ago in January 1997 when thirteen neighborhood watch groups decided to meet to improve the quality of life for West Anaheim residents. We held WAND meetings monthly along with the Land Use Committee which met every month to discuss projects coming before the Planning Commission. Our Community Participation Committee has brought to the community the popular Christmas Tree Lighting on the first Friday in December and the WAND BBQ the second Saturday in May at Twila Reid Park for the past thirteen years.
In the beginning, WAND’s wish list included numerous items: improved housing, police and fire stations, a youth center and an enlarged library. We worked cooperatively with City Council, City Manager, Planning Department, Neighborhood Services, Redevelopment Agency, Code Enforcement, Fire and Police Chiefs and various other city departments to succeed in our endeavors.
Today, due to WAND’s tireless efforts, we have a newly constructed 25,000 sq. ft. Haskett Library in an expanded Maxwell Park, a Police Station and Youth Center on Beach Blvd, and a Fire Station at Twila Reid Park. We wrote the letters to Washington, D.C. that resulted in a ten million dollar grant for the Brown Field Act remediation of “Sinkin Lincoln” (Lincoln & Beach Blvd.). With our community’s input and determination, “Sinkin Lincoln” no longer exists, but has made room for “Westgate Center”, a community towncenter, reality. Plans for the Westgate Center - a nine year project - so far, is scheduled for construction 2010. Westgate Center’s developer has signed Lowe’s as the anchor store.
The Tiger Woods Foundation chose to build the Tiger Woods Learning Center in West Anaheim adjacent to Dad Miller Golf Course. Today, students from Anaheim and from all over the world benefit from activities hosted by TWLF to promote student empowerment. The Tiger Woods Learning Center, OC is not only an academic facility, but an opportunity to explore career choices and preparation through hands-on activities and technology.
Our members have been tenacious in our work and the City of Anaheim listened. WAND demanded a higher quality of home, condo and apartment construction. Our “quality of life” in West Anaheim is better than it was thirteen years ago.
We invite you to join us in our endeavors to make West Anaheim a good place to live. We have no dues – we are volunteers who give our time and efforts – to accomplish what we do. You can become part of WAND by simply coming to our meetings and getting involved..
WAND would like to thank Judi Gollette for all her work, time and effort in researching and setting up this elaborate web site. She has created for us ready access to a myriad of links for finding out information relevant to the residents of West Anaheim and to make West Anaheim a better place to live, work, and play.
