WAND has asked for a public hearing before the Anaheim City Council over the approval of a CUP for the Hookah Bar in the 2900 block of W. Ball Road by the Planning Commissioners on February 24 by a vote of 4 to 3. WAND disagrees with this approval. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, at 5:30 PM. WAND is asking for the residents to support our arguments by being at the public hearing.

A workshop on Hookah Bars are presented at the beginning of the Commissioners' meeting on February 24 by Jonathan Borrego, Planning Dept., and Amy Buch, Orange County Health Dept. Various residents of West Anaheim spoke against the approval because of its close proximity to a large apartment complex (40 ft.) and to a school (160 ft.). The outdoor hookah lounge would be less than 30 ft. from the outdoor patio eating area of the restaurant next door. (See Hookah Bar Ordinance requirements in article below.) At the initial January 27th meeting before the Planning Commissioners, the owner of the restaurant next to the hookah site and residents from the apartment complex north of the site spoke in addition to a letter presented from the Chairman of the Renew West Anaheim group.

Inside Hookah Bars are going out of doors because of a new state law which does not allow food served inside where there is hookah smoking. However, many outdoor hookah bars are next to residences and their odor and vapors are offensive and not healthful to those residents. WAND is simply asking for the conditions of the ordinance be applied to hookah bars within 200 ft. of a residence, or 1000 ft. of a school and are not intrusive to outdoor eating areas.
